VOLUNTEERS are always welcome at North Florida School of Special Education! We have many projects throughout the school year where volunteers can make a big difference for our students. Whether a fundraising project for the school or an opportunity for you to share your time and talents, your involvement is appreciated and rewarding!
Parents of students attending NFSSE are required to give 10 hours of their time, per school-year. With all of the exciting things going on during the year, you are sure to find something that fits your talents and schedule.
We also welcome area schools to participate in activities with our students. Some of our current partnerships include Episcopal Middle School’s Leadership students. Episcopal has partnered with us to form the Junior-Senior After-School Projects Club. Each Tuesday, six to eight of Episcopal’s 7th and 8th grade Leadership students come to NFSSE to participate in a variety of fun activities with our Junior and Senior level students. Activities have included a flag football game, a scarecrow making project, creating Super Bowl place mats, painting Christmas ornaments, and cooking projects.
Another great partnership is with the college students from Jacksonville University’s Department of Sport & Exercise Science. Twenty-three students, who major in Physical Education at J.U., come to the campus twice a week during our Winter/Spring session. J.U. students work with our students on variety of indoor and outdoor physical education activities. As part of their grade, the college student’s implement a lesson plan for the activities to be carried out with our NFSSE students. It is a wonderful partnership that benefits both our students with developmental disabilities, as well as opening a new world and appreciation for the college students.
If you are an area artist, we welcome your talents! Recently, one of our favorite local artist’s, Tayloe White, spent 2 hours with our Middle School students. They created beautiful canvases using acrylics and oils, as well as a collage piece. It was a great time and provided our students with the chance to have a creative, hands-on project. Visiting artists are always a welcome site for the kids. We will provide the materials, if you will provide the talent!
There are many, many things happening at NFSSE and we are grateful for your time and assistance. The following are just some of the projects that need your help at various times during the year:
