Each day, we are reminded of the hope, love and community that define our North Florida School of Special Education family. Our roots grow deep, entwined with the commitment to nurture each student’s unique journey towards independence. This year, we are thrilled to share a remarkable story that embodies these values – the story of Camp Eagle. Camp Eagle represents a transformative partnership between NFSSE and Jacksonville University.
Camp Eagle has been operating for two summers and each year gets better! This summer, 12 of our transition and postgraduate students embarked on an adventure, living independently for the first time on JU’s beautiful campus. This experience was not a summer camp; it was a vital stepping stone in our students’ journey toward independence and self-confidence.
At Camp Eagle, students learned essential life skills. They managed their own budgets, planned transportation routes, and navigated the complexities of grocery shopping. These activities became profound lessons in independence and self-reliance for our students. Students planned meals, shopped for ingredients, and cooked together- fostering a sense of community and cooperation.

Transportation planning taught them the importance of time management and the intricacies of public transit. Through budgeting exercises, they learned financial responsibility and decision-making skills that will serve them for a lifetime.
Camp Eagle was more than just an educational experience. The supportive environment at JU, combined with the encouragement from our dedicated NFSSE staff, created a space where our students thrived.
As we continue to grow and evolve, we are excited to expand our programs and provide even more students with these invaluable experiences. Your continued support is the foundation that allows our students to flourish and reach their full potential. Together, we are building a future where every student feels a sense of belonging and the confidence to navigate the world independently.
