Student Spotlight- Cierra Penson

Student Spotlight- Cierra Penson

She is girl power, she is fierce! Cierra Penson is one of our talented postgraduate students at NFSSE. Her spirit is big, strong, and beautiful. Cierra’s determination has led her to experience many amazing things in her 26 years. One of her most profound achievements has been her connection with the Delores Barr Weaver Therapeutic Equestrian Center. When asked what her biggest accomplishment is, Cierra said “It is the bravery I had to first learn to ride horses.” Brave is simply an understatement when describing Cierra. Her hard work in the barn and the café, matched with her beautiful smile, are just two of her amazing attributes.

Cierra is NFSSE’s first student to win the gold medal in the Special Olympics while riding one of our beloved horses, Quinn. She is also the first paid postgraduate employee in the Project S.A.D.D.L.E program, which stands for Self-Sufficient Adults Developing Diverse Learning Experiences. This program at North Florida School of Special Education supports 50 postgraduate students as they learn to ride, handle, and provide care for the horses, while also learning the key tools of maintaining the barn. This is no easy feat as it requires students to first learn numerous equine skill sets and pass a qualifying test to become paid employees at the equestrian center. Project S.A.D.D.L.E is designed to provide students with the confidence and skills needed to help assist in riding lessons, barn etiquette and to thrive in the world of possibilities within equine-related industries.

Cierra’s skills and natural bond with the horses at the Equestrian Center are outstanding. Not only does she love to ride Izzy and guide Chief around NFSSE’s Special Olympic qualifying arena, but she also loves spending time with her friends and family. Cierra describes NFSSE as being “more than just a school, we are a true family.”

Cierra continues to make all of us proud each day as she continues to thrive. She personifies “Why walk when you can fly” with her strong determination and positive attitude. Her heart-warming smile simply tops the cake!
