The “First Hen” and First Lady of Jacksonville Make Surprise Visit to NFSSE for “A Pie or a Peck?”

First Lady Molly Curry brought Red, the First Hen of Jacksonville, to North Florida School of Special Education for the finale of “A Pie or a Peck?” class crowdfunding contest. “A Pie or a Peck?” culminated with Sally Hazelip, Head of School, and Ciaran Sontag, Music Teacher, kissing the “celebrity hen” and receiving pies to the face—per each winning class’ choosing.

Students and parents were surprised and delighted to learn the identity of the mystery “celebrity hen” as Mrs. Curry and one of their family’s chickens, Red, were introduced to the crowd of 200 students and parents during a school-wide Assembly.

Sally Hazelip and Ciaran Sontag were good sports as the students didn’t hold back in delivering whip cream pies with dramatic flair. Mrs. Curry and Red were also recipients of some friendly fire when the whip cream pies were flying. Red had her fair share of pecks, too. All agreed that it was worth the pies and pecks to see the joy in the students’ faces and celebrate families raising over $17,000 through crowdfunding efforts.  This event kicked-off the Berry Good Farms Weekend Festival.
